    Serving Others

As the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan wind down, the number of retiring veterans is expected to jump by 10-15%, to more than 275,000 annually. Many of these well-trained individuals are looking for new jobs, yet veterans often have a difficult time finding employment. This video profiles Dollar General, a Fortune 200 company that believes hiring veterans is a competitive advantage.

The business case is compelling. Many veterans have acquired the kind of leadership, personal discipline, and teamwork skills - born of experience - that employers are actively seeking. According to the Deputy Director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, “vets understand the concept of mission and what it means to be flexible in order to reach a goal. Many times, their survival depended on that.”

This film explores Dollar General's commitment to hiring military veterans by examining its workplace culture, hiring policies and resulting business success.

The DVD was created by the SHRM Foundation with support from the Ohio SHRM State Council and technical advice and assistance from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

A representative from NE ESGR (Nebraska Employer Support of The Guard and Reserve) will be there for a Question & Answer time after the video.
