About the program:
The purpose of the presentation is to discuss how to optimize individual and organizational performance through coaching techniques. Discussion topics include: distinguishing between coaching and mentoring; the purpose of coaching; and, the coaching process focused on coaching analysis and discussion. Attendees will apply coaching techniques through a coaching scenario.
At the end of the presentation, attendees will:
- Distinguish between mentoring and coaching
- Understand the coaching process
- Apply the coaching process to a case scenario
Coaching is an active and positive approach to improving employee and organizational performance. Human resource professionals are often tasked with training managers on how to have conversations on improving individual performance. Human resource professionals may also use these techniques to improve their own performance appraisal conversations

Dr. Brian Kufner is associate professor of Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior at the Wayne State College. Prior to relocating from the Chicago area to Wayne, Dr. Kufner spent 18 years as a human resource professional in the non-profit, consulting, and manufacturing industries. He has given presentations to community members, professional associations, and business chambers of commerce on various topics in human resource management, organizational behavior, and organizational development.
Dr. Kufner holds professional membership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Norfolk Area Human Resource Association (NAHRA), HR Nebraska, Wayne Area Economic Development (WAED), National Business Education Association (NBEA), and Mountain-Plains Business Education Association (M-PBEA). He also serves on several committees including Wayne Area Economic Development Business and Industry Committee, Society for Human Resource Management Student Chapter Advisory Council, and Wayne State College President’s Council for Diversity
